Are you prepared for Perimenopause?

Did you know that perimenopause can begin as early as 30 years old?

Though the great news is that for most women, the symptoms of perimenopause won't start until around 40-44 years old, giving you about 8-10 years before menopause occurs.

Being knowledgeable about the symptoms and the impact they can have on your overall well-being, including your skin and hair, is important and It's even better to be prepared and equipped to prevent and slow down the effects on your skin and hair health.

So what symptoms should you look out for?

Perimenopause is a transitional phase leading up to menopause, and it can bring about various symptoms. Here are some common symptoms that women may experience during perimenopause:

1. Irregular menstrual cycles: Changes in the length, duration, and flow of menstrual periods.

2. Hot flashes and night sweats: Sudden feelings of heat, often accompanied by sweating, flushing, and an increased heart rate.

…Deep breath ladies!

…changes you should be prepared to see in your skin & hair?

Well, during perimenopause, changes in skin and hair health are common due to hormonal fluctuations. Here are some changes you may expect to see:

1. Skin dryness: As estrogen levels decline, the skin may become drier and lose some of its natural moisture. This can result in roughness, itching, or flakiness.

2. Changes in skin elasticity: Collagen and elastin production may decrease, causing the skin to lose some of its elasticity. This can contribute to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging.

3. Acne or breakouts: Hormonal imbalances can trigger acne or breakouts, even in women who previously had clear skin.

4. Increased sensitivity: The skin may become more sensitive, reacting to irritants or products that were previously well-tolerated.

5. Thinning hair: Hormonal changes during perimenopause can affect hair follicles, leading to hair thinning or hair loss in some women. This is more commonly observed in the crown area of the scalp.

6. Changes in hair texture: Hair may become drier, more brittle, and less lustrous due to reduced oil production.

It's important to note that not all women will experience these changes, and the severity can vary. However, taking good care of your skin and hair can help minimise the impact of these changes. This includes maintaining a consistent skincare routine, using moisturisers and products suitable for your changing needs, protecting your skin from sun damage, and using gentle hair care products.

OK, so now you know the symptoms and what changes can occur to your body, skin and hair. Lets look to what kind of products you need to be considering for the Perimenopausal changes…

For perimenopausal skin, it's important to focus on hydration, protection, and promoting skin elasticity.

Here are my top skincare suggestions: (clickable links)

1. Gentle cleanser: Look for a gentle, hydrating cleanser that removes impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Avoid harsh cleansers that can further dry out the skin. My absolute favourite for this is
Hydro Peptide Cleansing Gel.

2. Hydrating moisturiser : Choose a moisturiser that is rich in hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides. These help replenish moisture and improve skin elasticity.
This is the cream I currently use and is a personal favourite - Hydro Peptide Power Lift Moisturiser!

3. Antioxidant-rich serum: Consider using a serum containing antioxidants like vitamin C or green tea extract. Antioxidants help protect the skin from environmental damage and support collagen production.
I have seen great results from many clients using the Hydro Peptide Firma Bright Vitamin C Serum.

4. Retinol or retinoid cream: Retinol or retinoid-based products can promote skin cell turnover, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and improve overall skin texture. Start with a low concentration and gradually increase usage to avoid irritation. Two of my favourites would have to the Hydro Peptide Retinol Booster and Retinol Eye Cream. As with all retinol you need to build up slowly to regular use.

5. Sunscreen: Protect your skin from UV damage by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Opt for one that is lightweight and suitable for everyday use such as The Genosys Multi Sun Cream SPF 40 is perfect for every day use.

6. Eye cream: Look for an eye cream that addresses specific concerns like fine lines, puffiness, or dark circles. Ingredients like peptides and hyaluronic acid can be beneficial. On my break days from retinol I opt for Hydro Peptide Eye Authority - Dark Circles, Puffiness, Fine Lines

On a more personal note…

It's crucial to remember that you are not alone, regardless of the stage of menopause you are currently experiencing. Seek support from relatives and friends who may have gone through or are currently experiencing similar symptoms. Hearing their firsthand experiences can provide valuable insight into what to expect. As women, we face numerous challenges throughout our lives, but it's important to acknowledge that we are a resilient group. However, if you ever feel overwhelmed or concerned about any symptoms, don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional or a trusted person in your life for support.

I hope this blog has helped and please remember I am always available for any help or support!

Much love,
